Ammonite Fossils for Sale

Ammonites belong to a group of predators known as cephalopods, this also includes other living creatures such as the octopus, squid, cuttlefish and nautilus. They were prolific breeders and lived in schools, they are among the most abundant fossils found today. These creatures lived in the sea between 240 - 65 million years ago and went extinct along with the dinosaurs. Our ammonite fossils for sale are used by scientists to date other fossils, they use the various shapes and sizes of the shells that appeared and disappeared through the ages.

Ammonite fossils are probably the most widely known and are easily recognisable with their ribbed spiral-form shell. They can be distinguished by their septa, the dividing walls that separate the chambers in the phragmocone, the nature of their sutures where the septa joint the outer shell wall, and in general by their siphuncles. We have a wide range of ammonite fossils for sale, one of the largest we currently own is Paracoroniceras sp. This fossil is 18.5 inches in diameter and 21kg in weight, it was found at Stonebarrow in Dorset and is approximately 195 million years old, from the Jurassic Period.
